Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), also known as Human Herpesvirus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and HHV-2), are two members of the Herpesvirus family that infect humans. Typical diseases related to these two viruses are herpes simplex (HSV-1) or genital herpes (HSV-2) and Herpes Viruses are part of the ToRCH screening panel, especially during pregnancy.

For the native antigens, Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (BA1051VS) (strain F) and Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (BA1052VS) (strain G) are cultivated in Vero cells and virus purification is performed by a two-step ultra-centrifugation. The antigens consists of virus particles and virus components and are suitable for the detection of IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies to HSV-1 or HSV-2 respectively.

In addition two recombinant HSV antigens are available – HSV-1 glycoprotein (BA1051RVS-G) and HSV-2 glycoprotein (BA1052RVS-G). Both antigens are produced in E. coli and purified by chromatography. These antigens are species specific for HSV-1 and HSV-2 in IgG assays and can therefore be used to differentiate between both viruses. Purity of ≥ 95 % is confirmed via SDS-PAGE (Coomassie staining).
